Elissa Foss

PhD Candidate
University Program in Genetics and Genomics – 2019

Elissa is a senior grad student in the lab and loves all things microbial. She has always been fascinated with the natural world and adored the PBS kids show “The Krat Brother’s”. She was ecstatic to design her PhD by blending her two interests, microbes and lemurs. Elissa’s work focuses on learning how the gut microbial communities of mouse lemurs could help digest and extract nutrients from hard to digest foods during harsh seasonal conditions. Elissa has worked with the captive colony of mouse lemurs at the Duke Lemur Center and collected from mouse lemurs in Madagascar. Elissa has also served as a teachers assistant for the undergraduate microbiology course at Duke and enjoys sharing her love of microbes with students.
